We discussed the demonstration that will be given at the DMDII on July
12th. An MTConnect adapter with a 4ms response has been installed on the
Hyundai WIA XF6300. This adapter is able to build good digital twins, in
real time, as shown by the following video.
http://www.steptools.com/blog/20170616_dmdii_tests/
The STEP-NC file used for dry run machining shown in the video is here:

An STL file made from the result of the twin simulation is here:

We had a blue sky discussion on how to promote the results of the DMDII
projects with a suggestion being made for a grand challenge to be issued
for IMTS 2018 and JINTOF 2018. The following summarizes the discussion:
*_Build Anywhere Grand Challenge_*
We are planning a major initiative for IMTS 2018 and JIMTOF 2018. The
probable title will be the “Build Anywhere Grand Challenge” and it will
use the results of the DMDII "Mind the Gap" (14-02-02) and "O3"
(14-06-05) projects to enable inter-operable machining and measurement.
We will get endorsement from the standards groups in July, and by the
aerospace industry in August. The sponsors will provide the models that
are to be machined and help pay for the costs of promotion.
Presentations to potential participants will take place in September,
October and November with the first rehearsal taking place at NIST in
January. After that there will be another three rehearsals at locations
convenient for each of the participating standards groups (STEP,
MTConnect and QIF). Finally, the IMTS show will take place from
September 10th and 15th 2018 in Chicago, followed by the JIMTOF show
from November 1st to 6th 2018 in Tokyo.
At the show, a new part will be released each day. Participating vendors
will be asked to machine the part and validate that it meets the
tolerances using on-machine and off-machine metrology. They will be
asked to deliver a QIF report summarizing the results of the
measurements and they will also be encouraged to explain why their
solution might be faster, less costly, or more accurate than that of
their competitors.
Participants will be given a STEP-NC file describing how to machine the
part. They will be allowed to choose between many strategies to make the
part including reading the STEP-NC file into a CAM system for post
processing, and processing the file directly on the CNC using the
technology developed by the DMDII projects.
Vendors will be required to demonstrate that they have met the AP242
tolerances using on-machine or off-machine metrology. If they use
on-machine metrology then they will be required to use MTConnect to
report their measurements. In both cases they will be asked to produce a
QIF report verifying their results.
The IMTS 2018 grand challenge will demonstrate “build anywhere” for
piece parts. A follow on grand challenge will demonstrate “build
anywhere” for assemblies.
A recording of the conference call is at:

The next conference call will be held at the regular times on Wednesday
June 28th.
