SC4/WG11,

I'm forwarding the announcement that went to several OMG committees that we
are finally to the point of starting the formal process of getting EXPRESS
recognized as an OMG modeling language. This will open many possibilities for
SC4 standards in the future.

Many thanks to Ed Barkmeyer of NIST who's done the majority of the work in
taking this to completion.

Cheers,
David

Dear all,

Herewith we announce the submission of the specification of a MOF
metamodel of the EXPRESS modeling language. The draft RFC is now on the
server as mantis/2007-09-01 at
  http://www.omg.org/cgi-bin/doc?mantis/2007-09-01

The XMI has been posted as mantis/2007-09-02 at
  http://www.omg.org/cgi-bin/doc?mantis/2007-09-02

A presentation of this RFC is scheduled for the upcoming OMG TC meeting
in Jacksonville and will be given by Ed Barkmeyer of NIST, the main
contributor to the EXPRESS metamodel development.

Further presentation detail:
ADPTF Plenary, Wednesday 26 Sep. 2007, 14:30 - ManTIS RFC by Ed
Barkmeyer.

Background:
The EXPRESS information modeling language is widely used in the scope of
the ISO 10303 Standard for Exchange of Product Data (STEP). It was
standardized in 1994 as Part 11 of the ISO 10303 and revised in 1999 and
2004.

More recently mappings from EXPRESS to XML Schema (ISO 10303-28) and UML
(ISO 10303-25) were defined to accomodate those users not familiar with
EXPRESS. However those mappings were entirely specified in a textual
notation and therefore lacked a precise implementation.

The MEXICO project (MOF based EXPRESS Integration and Co-existence)
aimed at applying OMG MDA technologies to support interoperability
between EXPRESS and other modeling tools and methodologies.
MEXICO comprises three parts:
1. Creation of a MOF metamodel of EXPRESS (NIST)
2. Development of a formal (QVT/ATL) mapping from EXPRESS to UML 2 based
on their respective metamodels (Fraunhofer IPK)
3. Development of a formal mapping from EXPRESS to OWL/ODM (Eurostep)

Subject of the submitted RFC is the EXPRESS metamodel only, while the
mappings are considered as proof of concept. Potentially the
specifications of the mappings may be submitted later as separate RFC's.

More details of the background and supporting activities are described
in the RFC.

Please don't hesitate to comment this RFC and contact us in case of
further questions.

Best regards,

Uwe
