We discussed the stage models and agreed on the following rules:
* Stage 1 - 50mm cutter, all pocket radii > 26mm, fillets to match
shoulder radius of cutter 3-axis machining
* Stage 2 - 20mm cutter, all pocket radii > 10.5mm, same z-depth as
stage 1, (process can make steps) 3-axis machining
* Stage 3 - 20mm & 16mm cutters, 50 thou on final , 4mm bottom radius,
pocket radii > 8.4 mm, fix the ding, 5-axis machining
* Stage 4 - 20mm (2.5mm radius) & 16mm (2mm radius) cutters,
machining to nominal, suggest programming for tool with 4mm radii
and machine with 2mm radii when necessary
Stage 1 removes material using a single large tool.
Stage 2 removes the remaining 3-axis material.
Sage 3 prepares for the 5-axis machining by leaving a constant shell.
Stage 4 meets the tolerances in a single pass.
Stage 4 is developed by design. Stage 3 can be made using automated
tools. Stage 1 requires creative thought but can be made quite quickly
using a CAD system. Stage 2 is the most challenging because the Stage 3
shell is not easy to manipulate.
The next conference call will be at the regular times on Wednesday.
