[step-manufacturing] RE: Meeting schedule for WG7 and SC1 inFrankfurt/Germany

Dear Everyone,

To add my observations on Ian Stroud's comment on Professor Suh's patent.

While it may be arguably appropriate for a patent to protect a researchers interests for specific CAD algorithms, however, that does not seem to be the nature of the patent application on this occasion.

The approach identified in the patent represents a (the) logical sequence for using manufacturing features and forms a central premise for the creation of a set of manufacturing features used in all of the STEP manufacturing domain. It would seem to be the 'intended usage' rather than the result of necessarily innovative academic or commercial research.

For example (c)  involves:-

(c1) selecting an machining operation defined by the ISO 14649 for each of the manufacturing features;
(c2) setting process data for the selected machining operation, the process data containing cutting tools information, a machining strategy designating a basic machining pattern, cutting conditions including a tool-accessing/withdrawing method, a cutting depth, an RPM and a feed rate, tool path connecting method and information instructing whether or not to use cutting oil;
(c3) creating workingsteps based on the manufacturing features and the corresponding machining operations;
(c4) grouping the workingsteps in accordance with a setup; and
(c5) determining a sequence of the workingsteps.

This sequence will be recognized by vendors of existing software.

Without doubting the good intentions of Prof. Suh, I am concerned by the association of a patent with the use (as intended) of an International Standard, which has received voluntary contributions from many countries/organizations, also needs to be considered.

Best regards Alan Crawford

Dear Martin Hardwick and Everyone,

This is just to inform you that I intend to attend the Frankfurt SC1/WG7 meeting. You mentioned that Mr. Sakamoto will represent T24, is there any particular question that is due to be discussed?

I have a couple of comments about your mention of Professor Suh's patent. First of all, I think that this is now a tendency, to protect academic research by patents because industry has, in the past, been all too ready to exploit published academic research without reimbursing either the original researchers or the funding agencies. This area of Intellectual Property seems very fuzzy and patent applications seem a natural tool for protecting researcher's interests. I see what look suspiciously like my published algorithms in CAD systems and I certainly haven't received any royalties. More importantly, since academics are now evaluate, probably almost everywhere, the lack of credit by commercial companies is a problem. Forcing commercial companies to acknowledge their use of academic work is also important. Finally, as far as I can see, Professor Suh's patent is a protection for further research. It is far better that the patent is in the hands of one of us than in the hands of some commercial vendor who might limit our research. I certainly trust Professor Suh not to block either academic or commercial developments. Even if a fee is payable to cover the cost of the original patent application I would be able to justify a one-off payment as part of a project. Is this to be discussed in Frankfurt?

Best regards - Ian Stroud

Dear Members of T24,

At our last meeting in Ibusuki we agreed that Mr. Sakamoto of Japan and the deputy leader of T24 would represent us at the S1/Wg7 meeting in Frankfurt.

If you plan to attend this meeting please be aware that there is a patent on ISO 14649 implementation held by Professor Suh.
