This is the Christmas edition of the STEP Tools Newsletter. This year
the STEP community has been nice (i.e. not naughty) so we have added
some translators to the Free translation service. For general

XML on the Free Translation Service

We have added two XML translators to the Translation Service. The
translators convert Part 21 data defined by the following schemas to
XML: AP-201, AP-202, AP-203, AP-209, AP-210, AP-214, AP-224, AP-227
and the IFC, PDM, POSC and TAS (space) schemas.

Two XML formats are supported. The Object Serialization Early Binding
(OSEB) gives XML data a format very similar to the Part 21 format. In
the OSEB each attribute of a Part 21 entity becomes an attribute of an
XML entity. The advantage being that OSEB data can be manipulated
using XML tools such as XSLT, whereas Part 21 must be manipulated
using text processing tools such as PERL or programming libraries such
as ST-Developer.

The Containment Early Binding (CEB) gives users more control over the
presentation and organization of STEP data. In this binding users pick
entities in a Part 21 file to be roots in XML trees.  The context the
trees give to the data makes the meaning of an entity easier to
understand and easier to process in an application program.
