Ian and Professor Suh,

My apologies I should have been more sensitive to your concerns.
STEP-NC was first coined as a term for ISO 14649. We harmonized
ISO 14649 with STEP to create AP238.

In this first round of implementation we are asking the vendors to
implement a common core of STEP-NC which is:

1. The STEP models for geometry, topology, GD&T and facets.
2. The STEP-NC models for the tool path process data and program
structure data.
3. The ISO 13399 model for tooling data.

We have made very effective use of this common core in our STEP
manufacturing experiments, particularly for Boxy and Moldy, which
are a sequence of AS-IS and TO-BE models of the geometry, before
and after each operation.

STEP-NC is no different to the other standards. There are always
disagreements on the more advanced features that are resolved with
experience.
Concerning your draft letter of support. Although, of
course, the primary concern of your group is AP238, David

incarnations of STEP-NC, ISO 14649 as well as ISO 10303
AP238. STEP-NC is a term coined by Siemens themselves and
was used first for ISO 14649, not AP238.
We been asked for a letter of support by Siemens NX
CAM. They are planning to start a STEP-NC
implementation project in 2015 and would greatly
appreciate a letter from us to help justify the
expense. A draft is attached.
