*Okuma, Sandvik and Iscar to demonstrate 15 to 30% improvement in
machining efficiency *

*IMTS - September 9-13, 2014*-- You already know that post processor's
create time delays, introduce errors and make it harder to take
advantage of new machines. Now a team led by the Organization for
Machine Automation and Control (OMAC) has shown how to enable a 15 to 30
percent increase in manufacturing efficiency by replacing post's with a
standardized CAM file.

Any CNC program can be optimized by modernizing its tooling, but the
optimizer must meet all the design and manufacturing requirements.
Gcodes do not have this information, so in 2012 OMAC issued a call to
develop standardized CAM files. In response new ISO standard interfaces
have been added to Catia, NX and Mastercam, and in May of 2013 Sandvik
and Iscar started cloud services to optimize programs using the new
files. The results are 15 to 30% better programs where the new
efficiency can be realized as time savings, tool wear savings, or some
combination of both.

At IMTS 2014, a test part developed by Boeing Commercial Airplane will
be machined every day at 11AM in the Okuma booth. The titanium part will
be machined using the original process, and then two optimized
processes. A new CAM file simulator on the control will direct the
machining and validate the design and manufacturing requirements. There
will be an opportunity to discuss the technology with STEP Tools, Inc.
at 2PM each day in the South building conference room.
