All,
This is a reminder/announcement of the session at the STEP meeting in Bath
next week on EXPRESS/UML aka Part 25 Edition 2. The session is planned for
Tuesday July 6 from 10:30 to 12:00.
The topics for discussion are:
- Update on EXPRESS/UML implementations
- Discuss draft NWI for Part 25 Edition 2
- Relationship of STEP and OMG MDA/UML
- Plan next actions
This session is following up from the Ft. Lauderdale STEP meeting where I
took an action to come up with a proposed New Work Item for a Part 25
Edition 2. I've written a few paragraphs to explain an approach for
discussion at the meeting as follows:
A Proposal for Part 25 Edition 2
Part 25 standardized a one-way mapping from EXPRESS Edition 1 to UML 1.5
designed to support STEP implementation using UML-based software engineering
tools. Part 25 Edition 2 will extend that mapping to cover EXPRESS Edition 2
constructs.
Part 25 Edition 2 will define a UML 1.5 representation of EXPRESS Edition 2
constructs annotated as EXPRESS. This will enable to representation of
EXPRESS and UML constructs on the same UML diagram. In OMG terms, this is a
"UML Profile for EXPRESS". This representation will enable the use of UML
tools to create EXPRESS schemas in a manner similar to the way EXPRESS-G
tools are used today. This representation will also enable the use of UML in
the specification of a complete software system that includes EXPRESS
constructs and the use of EXPRESS in the context of the OMG Model Driven
Architecture. It is expected that UML Stereotypes and Tagged Values, not
extensions to UML itself, will be used to define this aspect of Part 25
Edition 2.
Part 25 Edition 2 will also include the use of the OMG Object Constraint
Language to represent EXPRESS constraints where a straightforward
representation is easily defined. It is not expected that the full scope of
the EXPRESS expression language will be covered. However, it is expected
that the subtype constraints will be covered.
As UML 2 and MOF 2 are not yet finalized and not yet commercially available
in UML tools, Part 25 Edition 2 is focused on UML 1.5. It is expected that
further work in a Part 25 Edition 3 will be required to address UML2 and MOF
2 in 2005.
Cheers,
David
