Since 1991 STEP Tools has been developing tools and databases for
product data. This weekly newsletter is a brief update of what is
going on in STEP and at STEP Tools, Inc. If you want to know more,
try the STEP Tools web site (http://www.steptools.com).
This letter is two days late because of the SHIIP demonstration
(see below). There will be no newsletter next week because of
July 4.

Model Driven Intelligent Control of Manufacturing
STEP Tools has been invited to the oral reviews for this years
ATP program. Therefore we have made it to the second round of
the selection process and if we make a good case there is a high
chance our proposal will be funded.
If we are funded then we will be able to demonstrate the
advantages of STEP-NC by showing how an NC Controller can read
information from an integrated design and manufacturing database
(instead of from an RS274 file) and use that information to more
intelligently manufacture parts.
-------------------------------------------
Cycle 3 Demonstration for the SHIIP Program
The third and final demonstration of the SHIIP program was a big
success. The demonstration showed a set of Enterprise Java Beans
being used by various ship building applications.
The STEP portion of the demonstration showed a planning change
management (PCM) application. The demonstration showed the
Enterprise JavaBeans for this application executing first against
a CATIA Data Manager (CDM) database and then against a STEP database.
There was no visible difference to the end-user between the two
databases except the CDM version contained all the data in the master
database of the contractor, and the STEP version contained just the
data that had been made available to a supplier. The STEP file
sent to the supplier was a MARISTEP file containing AP-217 data.
The EJB's used an object model convenient for the PCM application.
We used ST-Repository to map STEP information into the EJB's. EXPRESS-X
was used to map from the STEP data model to the EJB Object model.
The SDAI Java was used to format the mapped data so that it could be
processed by the EJB's.

Object Oriented Information Modeling with EXPRESS
Tuesday/Wednesday July 13-14, 1999
All classes are held at STEP Tools, Inc. in Troy, New York.
This course introduces the student to information modeling, the
EXPRESS language and its companion EXPRESS-G and EXPRESS-X
languages. Demonstrations and class exercises are included in the
course.
